Accelerated
Reader (AR) is a nationally recognized reading practice program now
used at Anasazi Elementary in Grades 2-5. It is a program used by
most of the elementary schools in our district. When beginning
the program, teachers have their students take a STAR Reader test
to determine the approximate reading level range of each student.
Students then read AR books and take quizzes on those books. The Accelerated
Reader Program allows teachers to more quickly track student progress
in reading, select appropriate reading materials for independent reading
success, and give information to parents. Reading levels are determined
by book length, vocabulary, and book content. Parents have access
to the Anasazi AR quiz list from the Anasazi
Library Web page. Students’ computer tests are only available
at school. This program provides motivation for students, gives them
feedback on the books they have just read when they answer questions
about them, and most importantly, it gives teachers a tool to help
ensure success in reading for each individual child. Funding for this
program is provided by the Anasazi PTO and the school library. Last year we will began using the online version of Accelerated Reader called Ren Place.

The
Grand Canyon Reader Award - Over 50,000 students across the state
of Arizona nominate their favorite books for this award each year.
In the elementary school library we have 2 categories: primary and
intermediate fiction. Students in Grades 1-3 hear many of the stories
nominated during Anasazi library storytime. Students in grades 4
& 5 are introduced to the books in their categories and portions
of those titles are shared to get them interested in reading them.
Students who have read at least 5 of the nominated titles have the
opportunity to vote on the one title that is their favorite and
they also have the opportunity to nominate titles for next year’s
award. The Arizona Young Reader Award is sponsored by the Arizona
Library Association, Teacher-Librarian Division. Winning authors
are invited to Arizona to accept this award at the annual Arizona
Library Association Convention.

The Young Author program began 18 years ago to encourage Anasazi students to develop
their stories, research skills, poems, and artistic skills in honor of National Library
Week. All grades participate in this program as we
encourage and mentor students when they work with their classroom teachers
to write stories or poem collections, proofread, edit and polish their
work. Submissions must include a
rough draft and a final typed and illustrated copy.
You will receive more information from your child's teacher about specific requirments. A team of judges representing each grade level and
special subject teachers chooses the two best stories and four top poems from each
grade level. Winning poems and books are published
and copies are placed in our library for all children to check out.
We host a Young Author's Celebration in May honoring all of the winning authors and those whose works were submitted. Students learn that they truly are authors and that writing and expressing themselves is a skill for all ages. |
