The Accessible Curriculum
Learning Supports for the General Curriculum
Students, who receive Learning Resource services, attend general education classes with their peers but require additional assistance to adequately master the subject material. The degree and type of service vary from student to student.
The students frequently have difficulty with remembering and understanding different facets of the curriculum. We work on learning strategies to overcome these obstacles.
Some of our students have difficulty with getting school work done on time while participating in extracurriculars. The kids learn to use their planners daily, break down large projects into smaller bits to be worked on over time, to organize papers into folders by subject area, and to assume personal responsibility for their own outcomes.
The students also discuss their personal strengths and weaknesses (IEPs), problem solve with these in mind, and develop appropriate self-advocacy skills.
On a personal note, I earned a M.A.+ over 72 graduate credits and have taught 31 years in all disability areas with students' ranging in age from 11 months through 18 years. Although I have been with Scottsdale Unified School District since 1986, my teaching experience also includes working in private and public schools in Wisconsin and Oklahoma. As a parent of a special needs son, I have attended 12-years' worth of IEP meetings for my younger son with learning disabilities.
I also co-authored the Arizona Accessible Textbook Law. This law requires Arizona's K-12 public schools to purchase new textbooks from vendors who have the textbooks and work books available in "accessible" digital files, which are usually CDs or Internet-based books. "Accessible" means that the digital file is "open" or can interface with other accessibility or instructional software. According to the proposed rules and regulations, this law goes into effect for any new textbooks adopted and purchased for use in the 2006-2007 school year. These accommodations are for students with documented disabilities (IEP or Section 504 Plan) for this type of accommodation(s).
