You spend about half of your waking hours at school or doing things in preparation for school. School is here to prepare you to be successful in life. You may or may not know what you want to do for a living. Your future seems so far ahead of you. You will have to find a job, get hired, manage your finances, find a place to live, budget your spending and income for clothes, utilities, car, insurance, food, entertainment, etc. It is important that you, your parents and teachers have a good working relationship. A good relationship will help you to do better in school as well as reduce stress in your life. Share this with your parents and ask them to make comments or questions about the topics listed below.
Here are some pointers to help you become more successful in school and life in general. Some will also help build relationships of trust with your parents, teachers and others.
1. GOALS. Set
some goals for yourself. What do you want to achieve this semester in school, do
you want to work this coming summer, if so, at what?
2. ESTABLISH A ROUTINE. Set up
regular times to do your homework, play, and go to bed. If you don't have any
assigned homework one night, read something of interest to you. Watch only as
much television as you study/read/do crafts/hobbies/communicate with family
members and friends.
3. ASK FOR HELP. If you don't
understand something ask the "stupid" question, one that prevents you and others
from being stupid. If you still don't quite get it, talk with the teacher or
another person at another time. The old proverb says, ask and you will receive
works more often than you think.
4. THINK POSITIVELY. If you catch
yourself degrading yourself talking to yourself in a negative way, say, "Cancel"
and rephrase the comment into a positive one.
5. HAVE A QUITE PLACE TO WORK. The
least distractions (including active, loud music) will help the brain focus on
the work you are doing.
6. EMPATHIZE. Keep an open mind.
If you have a problem with someone, try to put yourself in their place and look
at the problem. Once you have done this, see if you can work out a compromise.
7. TALK WITH YOUR PARENTS. HONOR THEM.
Talk with them about their day at work. Find out what happens in their life,
they are human too and would like to hear that you care about them. Say that you
appreciate their work and care for you. Let them know what's happening with you,
the good, the bad, and the ugly things. Make it a light, maybe even comical
conversation. Get them to laugh a bit with you.
8. EAT WELL. Without the proper
fuel, a dragster won't go as fast. Similarly, without the right fuel/food in
you, your whole body will not function to its optimum. Your physical, mental and
spiritual aspects of 'you' will not work as well. Eat fresh, whole and
unadulterated (no additives) food. Eat less, or even better, no sugar.
9. GET A BUDDY/WORK WITH A TEAM.
Have a friend who you will see and talk with each day. During some of the time
you spend together support each other's development toward your goals.
10. COMPLIMENT OTHERS. Talk nicely
about others. People's blood sugar levels rise when they receive a compliment,
they also feel better about you and themselves. Another old proverb says, "If
you don't have anything nice to say about someone, don't say anything."
11. BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE. At least
30 minutes a day, walk, run, fly a kite, play, skip, swim, or anything else that
raises you heart beat above that of simple sitting. This activity makes your
body healthier, opens energy channels so you feel more energetic, your mind work
better, and it even helps you to sleep better.
12. VOLUNTEER. You learn a lot
while helping others. Your 'pay' is the opening of love in your heart and seeing
others hearts open more to you and to life in general.
13. KEEP A SUCCESS JOURNAL/DIARY.
Write down the successes of each day. You'll see the list growing longer and
longer as you begin to follow these suggestions.
14. LISTEN TO OTHERS. This
includes teachers and friends. Listen as you would like them to listen to you.
15. TELEVISION. Promise yourself
to watch less TV as much as you prepare for school and/or read or exercise (play
games like basketball, soccer, etc., outside). 2 hours of TV = 2 hours or more
of school preparation
16. WRITE YOUR OWN SUCCESS PRACTICE, AND THEN:
FOLLOW IT ONE STEP AT A TIME.
Read these over before going to bed each night.
