Lecture for world war one

Four main reasons for the world war

One is imperialism and the need to grab more land

Two militarism, which is the build up of weapons and tactics

Three nationalism, two kinds lead to the great powers acting in their own best              interest and nationalism in diverse populations caused fighting in the country

Four Alliances, the countries of Europe had developed an intricate system of             alliances.

The time line for the great war was the archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated on June 28 1914

One month later July 28, 1914 Austria Hungary convinced that Serbia was behind the assassination attacked Serbia

On July 29 1914 Russia came to the aid of Serbia as it protector and began mobilization for war, preparing the troops for war

Germany asked Russia to back down and stop mobilizing, when Russia refused, Germany declared war on Russia and France ally to Russia declared war on Germany.

One week after the conflict started all major powers of Europe were involved. Germany and Austria Hungary was the Central Powers

Russia, France, Serbia, and great Britain were called the allies.

By December 1914 the Ottoman Empire entered the war on the side of the Central Powers.

And in Spring of 1915 Italy entered on the side of the Allies

War fare in the 20th century

Under the idea of militarism, countries prepared for war and established plans for the attacking and protection of their respective countries. The German approach and plan was called the Schlieffen Plan which called for a swift first strike sweep through France thus taking France out of the war.

New fighting  weapons against old antique methods of fighting caused Europe to lose a great deal of young men between the ages of 18 and thirty

Not knowing how to fight against the new weapons military leaders used outdated tactics to fight the war against these new weapons

Trench warfare was the new method of fighting

No man’s land barbed wire and other things

Machine guns mustard gas tanks airplanes both sides started waging total war

U-boats or submarines were used to sink ships

While British blockade of Germany slowly starved the Germans

Artillery was used more during this war, at the battle of the Somme in 1916 the British lost 20,00 men in one day the attack was so fierce that the bombing could be heard three hundred miles away in London.

American response

Most of those living in America were of European descent, so people were anxious to go to war for their families in Europe

America wanted to follow the idea of George Washington regarding isolationism

The overseas investments of American businesses lead to the united states getting involved in the war on August 4, 1914 Wilson proclaimed the u.s. as a neutral nation

The united states reacted in two different ways sent up camps to train Americans for combat in 1916 congress increased the number of military forces

On the other hand the peace groups also started growing in numbers with women marching in the streets of America saying no to war

Global impact of the war (economic chaos followed the war as well as political problems)

Middle East, British had promised support for Arabs who wanted independence from Ottoman Empire Balfour Declaration supported establishment of Jewish homeland in Palestine. G. B. helped establish Iraq and Trans-Jordan for the Arabs and Palestine for the Jews.

Armenia was area where genocide was practiced. Muslims had been killing Christian Armenians since 1894 and continued until 1922. When Ottoman Empire entered war, they killed 1.5 million Armenians because they feared the Armenians would help the enemies.

Russia was involved in a bloody civil war that was fought between the non-Communists and the Communists.

Germany was under the rule of the Weimar Republic. This government-faced depression caused by the war as well as the no food, no fuel, huge reparations to the Allied countries. The country was also very up set at eh treaty of Versailles.
