One is imperialism and the need to grab more land
Two militarism, which is the build up of weapons and tactics
Three nationalism, two kinds lead to the great powers acting in their own
best
interest
Four Alliances, the countries of Europe had developed an intricate system
of
alliances.
The
time line for the great war was the archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated
on June 28 1914
One
month later July 28, 1914 Austria Hungary convinced that Serbia was behind the
assassination attacked Serbia
On
July 29 1914 Russia came to the aid of Serbia as it protector and began
mobilization for war, preparing the troops for war
Germany
asked Russia to back down and stop mobilizing, when Russia refused, Germany
declared war on Russia and France ally to Russia declared war on Germany.
One
week after the conflict started all major powers of Europe were involved.
Germany and Austria Hungary was the Central Powers
Russia,
France, Serbia, and great Britain were called the allies.
By
December 1914 the Ottoman Empire entered the war on the side of the Central
Powers.
And
in Spring of 1915 Italy entered on the side of the Allies
War
fare in the 20th century
Under the idea of militarism, countries prepared for war and established
plans for the attacking and protection of their respective countries. The German
approach and plan was called the Schlieffen Plan which called for a swift first
strike sweep through France thus taking France out of the war.
New
fighting weapons against old
antique methods of fighting caused Europe to lose a great deal of young men
between the ages of 18 and thirty
Not
knowing how to fight against the new weapons military leaders used outdated
tactics to fight the war against these new weapons
Trench
warfare was the new method of fighting
No
man’s land barbed wire and other things
Machine
guns mustard gas tanks airplanes both sides started waging total war
U-boats
or submarines were used to sink ships
While
British blockade of Germany slowly starved the Germans
Artillery
was used more during this war, at the battle of the Somme in 1916 the British
lost 20,00 men in one day the attack was so fierce that the bombing could be
heard three hundred miles away in London.
American
response
Most of those living in America were of European descent, so people were
anxious to go to war for their families in Europe
America
wanted to follow the idea of George Washington regarding isolationism
The
overseas investments of American businesses lead to the united states getting
involved in the war on August 4, 1914 Wilson proclaimed the u.s. as a neutral
nation
The
united states reacted in two different ways sent up camps to train Americans for
combat in 1916 congress increased the number of military forces
On
the other hand the peace groups also started growing in numbers with women
marching in the streets of America saying no to war
Global impact of the war (economic chaos followed the war as well as political problems)
Middle East, British had promised
support for Arabs who wanted independence from Ottoman Empire Balfour
Declaration supported establishment of Jewish homeland in Palestine. G. B.
helped establish Iraq and Trans-Jordan for the Arabs and Palestine for the Jews.
Armenia was area where genocide
was practiced. Muslims had been killing Christian Armenians since 1894 and
continued until 1922. When Ottoman Empire entered war, they killed 1.5 million
Armenians because they feared the Armenians would help the enemies.
Russia was involved in a bloody
civil war that was fought between the non-Communists and the Communists.
Germany was under the rule of the Weimar Republic. This government-faced depression caused by the war as well as the no food, no fuel, huge reparations to the Allied countries. The country was also very up set at eh treaty of Versailles.
