Manifest Destiny

New Mexico:  Spain discouraged trade and any contact with U.S.  Mexican Independence opened trade possibilities with Mexico.  William Becknell traded goods in Santa Fe followed a new trade Route Santa Fe Trail.

Texas: 1st American settlement San Felipe de Austin founded by Stephen F. Austin.  Settlers must be Catholic and pledge loyalty to the Mexican Government.

Slaves and Immigration limited by Mexico.

1835 Texans drove Mexico out of Alamo.

1836 Santa Anna defeats the force at the Alamo.

Sam Houston defeats Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto.

Slave question Annexation of Texas after deal w/ England to acquire Oregon Territory.

Mexican – America War ended 1848 lands ceded by Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo bought back 5 yrs later.

Oregon and California

Oregon was claimed by Britain to U.S.

Fur Trading was 1st settlements in Oregon Territory. John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company in Astoria at mouth of Columbia British takes over 1812.

1820’s Hudson Bay Company solid hold on territory.

Jedediah Smith discovered mountain path to Oregon.  Oregon Trail.

Dana’s Book “Two Years before the Last” interested Americans about California.

Mormons:

            Members of Church of Latter Day Saints founded by Joseph Smith.

1844 Brigham Young moved to Salt Lake Basin.

Became expert in desert farming developed excellent irrigation methods.

Gold Rush: 1848 James Marshall discovers gold at Sutter’s Mill in California.

1849 Forty-niners searching for fortunes.
