U.S. annexed Midway Islands for the purpose of refueling and re supply of the merchant and naval ships

Hawaii could seel sugar to the United States with no duty if  they sold to no one else and the Hawaiians would not lease land to other countries. U.S. business influence in Central America created places known as bananas republics

In order to protect this new business interest the U.S. used the ships that were used during the civil war

It became necessary to   to build stronger Navy, economic success in the future is based on new markets abroad. New ships in navy were needed  to protect these markets. Admiral mahan the Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660-1783
