Imperialism: stronger nations create empires by dominating
weaker nations economically, politically, culturally, and militarily
Why imperialism grew
Four factors
Economic factors: growth of indust4ry in Europe created need for raw materials and other markets for products
Nationalist: competition of European countries to control large empires made up of smaller weaker countries.
Military factors: Advances in weaponry gave Europe huge advantages over Asia and Africa
Humanitarian factors: spreading the wealth of knowledge regarding medicine food money and law and religion.
The United States followed Washington’s policy of remaining neutral in the affairs of the world until the late 1800s
Alaska was purchased in 1866 and until gold was discovered it was considered worthless.
In the Pacific Ocean, the United States sailed into the Tokyo Bay opening the region for trade with the United States
U.S. annexed Midway Islands for the purpose of refueling and re supply of the merchant and naval ships
Hawaii could seel sugar to the United States with no duty if they sold to no one else and the Hawaiians would not lease land to other countries. U.S. business influence in Central America created places known as bananas republics
In order to protect this new business interest the U.S. used the ships that were used during the civil war

Spanish-American war
Third events lead up to the conflict all are in the Latin American countries

2. Two years later, a riot and rebellion in Brazil was stopped when the U.S. Navy sailed into the bay of Rio De Janeiro

rich in minerals, the U.s. discussed the Monroe Doctrine which said that if
Europe tried to do anything in the new world, the u.s. would come to the aid of
the country located in the western hemisphere, The British were concerned with
the Germans so a truce was made between great Britain and the u.s.
Cuba was only 90 miles from

1898 Treaty of Paris ended the Spanish-American war. Spain gave up Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico and Cuba with the united States Philippinos fought the Americans very hard to win control of their country very ugly battles.
Cuba was put under the United States with a military government until 1900 when a constitution was developed the Platt amendment was created and added to the constitution of Cuba so that the United Sttes could have two naval bases on Cuba and the Cuban government could not enter into foreign relationships with other countries

The European countries had areas of trade with in the orient and the
these dealings with the Chinese was known as “spheres of influence” the
united states called foul, these countries should be open to all countries for
trade. The Open Door Policy called for the other countries to allow the United
States to trade in china, which would allow American companies to sell to the
Chinese population

Panama Canal why was it needed.
With the usage of the navy in the conflict with Spain it was important to be able to get naval forces from one part of the world to another as quickly as possible. Now that the United States had more territories to protect this would be very important. Also the canal would aid trade and therefore business and commerce of all countries.
France started the construction
