Your job is to create a 9 month calendar to educate others about the organ systems that make up the human body. You may choose to work with a partner on this project. Your calendar must include the following:
9 month calendar starting with September 2007 and ending with May 2008.
Include all the information listed on your “Body System Checklist.”
You may use pictures/diagrams from the Internet or you may draw your own illustrations.
You may use your textbook, reference materials, or online resources to research each organ system. Be sure to check “Biology Links” on my website for online resources!
Your “Project Plan & Rubric” must accompany your calendar.
Your project should include the following parts:

1. Circulatory System – September 2007
Major functions of the circulatory system.
Diagrams that include the major parts – heart, arteries, veins, capillaries with the path blood travels through your heart.
Describe each of the components of blood – red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma.
Explain how your body system works with other systems in the body. You will need at least 3 examples.
Find 3 weird and/or gross facts about this body system.
2. Respiratory System – October 2007
Major functions of the respiratory system.
Diagrams that include the major parts – trachea, lungs, diaphragm, epiglottis, larynx, vocal cords.
Describe the “breathing” process.
Explain how your body system works with other systems in the body. You will need at least 3 examples.
Find 3 weird and/or gross facts about this body system.
3. Nervous System – November 2007
Major functions of the nervous system.
Diagrams that include the major parts – brain (parts of the brain), spinal cord, nerves, neurons.
Describe the path a nerve impulse travels throughout the body from stimulus to response.
Explain how your body system works with other systems in the body. You will need at least 3 examples.
Find 3 weird and/or gross facts about this body system.
4. Skeletal System – December 2007
Major functions of the skeletal system.
Diagrams that include the major parts – bones (those studied in class), ligaments, tendons.
Describe each of the following joints and where they are located: hinge, pivot, gliding, saddle, and ball-and-socket.
Explain how your body system works with other systems in the body. You will need at least 3 examples.

5. Muscular System – January 2008
Major functions of the muscular system.
Describe the function and locations of each type of muscle – skeletal, smooth, and cardiac.
Diagram that includes the major muscles in the body (those studied in class).
Describe how muscles work in pairs to make parts of the body move using the biceps and triceps as an example.
Explain how your body system works with other systems in the body. You will need at least 3 examples.

6. Excretory System – February 2008
Major functions of the excretory system.
Diagrams that include the major parts – lungs, kidneys, urinary bladder, ureter, urethra, liver, skin.
Explain how your body system works with other systems in the body. You will need at least 3 examples.

7. Digestive System – March 2008
Major functions of the digestive system.
Diagrams that include the major parts – mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, liver, pancreas, large intestine.
Describe the path food travels throughout the digestive system.
Explain how your body system works with other systems in the body. You will need at least 3 examples.
Find 3 weird and/or gross facts about this body system.
8. Endocrine System – April 2008
Major functions of the endocrine system.
Diagrams that include the major parts – hypothalamus, pituitary, thymus, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreas, ovaries, testes.
Describe what hormones are and what they do.
Explain how your body system works with other systems in the body. You will need at least 3 examples.

9. Immune System – May 2008
Major functions of the immune system.
List the functions of each part of the immune system – thymus, white blood cells, antibodies, epidermis, cilia, mucus, and saliva.
Explain how vaccinations work and give 3 examples of diseases that are prevented through the use of vaccinations.
Explain how your body system works with other systems in the body. You will need at least 3 examples.

Your project will be graded upon the following criteria:
Be sure to attach your rubric to your calendar. You and your partner will earn the same grade for this project.
