"Insane in the Membrane!"

Due Date: Wednesday, October 10, 2007

You will be required to construct a cross section model of a plant or animal cell membrane. All models must be made by spending no more than $5.00 on materials for your cell. Be creative with recycled or reusable materials!

Your project should include the following parts:

The following components must be included and labeled:

• Phospholipids - specify hydrophilic "head" and hydrophobic "tails."
• Embedded membrane proteins:  ion channel, carrier protein (facilitated diffusion - glucose), and sodium-potassium pump.
• Cholesterol molecules.
• Carbohydrate chain, marker proteins, receptor protein, and cell wall (if plant cell).
• Representation of endocytosis and exocytosis.
• Include an appropriate key that identifies the parts and gives the specific function for each membrane component. Must be typed.
• The cell model should not be more than 40 cm in height, length, or width and no smaller than 10 cm.

Your project will be graded upon the following criteria:

• Function/structure relatedness is present - 30 points.
• All structures are present - 20 points.
• All functions of parts are present - 20 points.
• Creativity and uniqueness throughout project - 10 points.
• Overall neatness of your project - 5 points.
• The cell is well built - does not easily fall apart - 5 points.
• Project meets the size requirements - 5 points.
• Total materials for project were $5.00 or less - 5 points.

General information:

You could be awarded with a bonus (5 extra points) if your project is selected to be the "Most Accurate," "Most Attractive," or "Most Creative."

Your project will be worth 100 points. Cells that are turned in late will not be accepted no ifs, ands, or buts about it! Do not, I repeat, do not wait until the last possible moment to start your project. This is your project, therefore, your responsibility. Take pride in your work and show me how brilliant and creative you can be!

I did not spend more than $5.00 on my supplies for this assignment.
