Text Box: Welcome to the Life Skills Class at Desert Mountain High School. The LSC is a cross categorical program for K-12 students with substantial handicaps (educable and trainable mental handicaps, severe multiple handicaps and severe learning disabilities.). Our program is founded on the premise that students with substantial handicaps must be educated in the least restrictive environment in order to become productive, contributing members of society.

The goal of the LSC is to prepare each student for independent community living and employment to the extent possible for the individual. The school and local communities are used as the classroom to teach community –based curriculum focusing on fundamental academics, vocational training and independent living skills including recreational / leisure skills. All classes on the DMHS campus provide physical, functional and social integration with the student’s peers. Effective classroom management, administrative policy development and transition from school to work and adult life are also integral parts of our program.

Multiple-disciplinary teams composed of parents, teachers, related service personnel and administrators determine placement in the LSC and develop student programs based on individual needs. Service delivery is based on placement in the least restrictive environment including participation in mainstream classes as appropriate.

Instructional assistants are assigned to the LSC based on the number and severity of handicapping conditions. Related services are provided on an individual, group and consultative basis for adapted PE, speech/language, occupational and physical therapy, vision and hearing.
